The collector delivered a stack of randomly-shaped cherry countertop sections, salvaged from her kitchen remodel. Would it be possible to create a dining table and bench for her outdoor portal? And could I preserve the scratched-up spot on the wood where her late husband had done battle with a stubborn oyster? Pieced together like a cherry wood quilt top, the Portal Dining Table and bench are supported by fabricated steel bases. The oyster battle site has an honored corner on the table top.

The collector had a vision: somehow combine the back seat section of her great-granddad’s 1920-something Buick and a fallen cottonwood log from their “Big Tree pasture,” so named for the grand cottonwood that grew up in the fence line, sprouted from a green cottonwood fence post. The 17-foot log, shortened to 8-1/2 feet and mostly hollowed out with chainsaws, serves as the settee base. After some serious body work, the car seat sets into the log accessed by cottonwood steps and handrails made from a wagon tire.
